Over the past several months, the Utility sector of the market has been crushed as rising Treasury yields reshape the relative appeal of income-oriented stocks. Higher rates create a two-sided challenge for utilities: their capital-intensive businesses face higher financing costs, while increasingly attractive Treasury yields compete directly with the dividends that traditionally draw investors into the sector. Sempra Energy (SRE) stood out on Monday as that pressure pushed the stock to a fresh 52-week low, extending a sharp downtrend marked by a steady sequence of lower highs and lower lows. With the possibility of another Fed hiking cycle adding another layer to the rate backdrop, SRE’s breakdown is a clear example of how quickly changing bond-market conditions can spill into the equity tape, but also present a trading opportunity.

Rather than shorting the stock outright, one way I’d look to express this bearish view is through a slightly ITM put option, keeping the amount of capital committed relatively small while retaining meaningful downside participation. The attraction is that if SRE continues lower, the option can potentially gain value at an exponetial rate as the stock falls. For example, at current prices, one specific put option could be on pace for a 103.9% profit potential if SRE declines 10% by expiration, illustrating the leverage available if the bearish thesis plays out as anticipated.
