Energy costs are becoming a more important variable across the airline group, and the stocks that had absorbed earlier price spikes are now showing more strain as elevated fuel prices begin to pinch margins. The deterioration is becoming visible in the tape, with one of the sector’s stronger names now giving back ground through a sequence of lower highs and lower lows following its early-August double top. That setup puts Delta Air Lines (symbol: DAL) firmly on the bearish radar, but the technical confirmation is what makes the breakdown more notable: its MACD line has remained below the trigger line since mid-July, signaling that downside momentum has taken control. With both price structure and momentum now pointing lower, the evidence suggests this decline may have further room to develop.

Rather than shorting DAL shares, I’d look to express the bearish view through a slightly in-the-money put option, keeping the amount of capital committed relatively small while retaining meaningful participation if the stock continues lower. The appeal of the put is that the risk is defined by the premium paid, while the option can potentially gain value at an accelerating rate as the underlying stock declines. One current example, if DAL were to fall 10% by expiration, a put at current prices could be on pace for an 86.3% profit, although the actual result would depend on the option’s price, time remaining and market conditions.
