You have a debt to pay and you probably don’t even know it. If you have ever placed a trade and used any kind of resource to help figure out your strategy, chances are extremely high that it stemmed from one place.
Have you ever heard of candle charts? How about using technical analysis to predict the markets? The impact of psychology on your trading?
The seminal works on these topics all came from one place. It was so influential that it trademarked the phrase “Where Wall Street Goes to School”. The books that were created from this program were mandatory reading for traders when they cam to Wall Street. In the 80s and 90s it carved a path that set the standard for how anyone interested in the markets would learn.
With a roster of authors like John Murphy, Steve Nison, Larry McMillan, Mark Douglas, Jake Bernstein, Jack Schwager and many, many more it produce educational tools that have been sought after for over 30 years.
Here is how they established such a massive influence.
Since 1922 traders have been going to the New York Institute of Finance to learn the most respected and cutting edge techniques for traders. The instructors who taught these course became the authorities on their topics. Larry McMillan’s Options as a Strategic Investment is called “The Bible of Option Trading.” They even established brand new methods of analysis that are still in use today. For example, Steve Nison’s teachings on Candlestick Charts had really never been used before he started teaching them at NYIF. Today, they are on every single charting platform available.
In the late 80s and into the 90s, the financial publishing world was cut-throat and publishers were very aggressive in their competition to sign a best selling author that could create enough demand to hit the high print runs they were shooting for.
Prentice Hall scored the deal to publish books under the New York Institute of Finance imprint which gave them tremendous credibility and meant every student going through these highly regarded programs would use their books. As ambitious as they were, it is hard to believe they could imagine these books would still be best sellers over 30 years later, even after printed books became nearly obsolete.
This massive success paved the way for other top financial publishers like Wiley Finance, Windsor Books, M. Gordon Publishing Group (Connors Research), Irwin Publishing, Probus Publishing and many more.
The arc of influence of these books is so long because they have been highly effective trading tools and have stood the test of time. Many of these authors are still teaching today and many more trader may not even realize the massive influence these legends have had.
Keep learning and trade wisely.
